I think after 40 years, too much resistance in the original heating coils was causing the black wire to melt and detach. Slapped in one of these and worked perfectly on first start!
This worked perfectly in our 40 yr old Maytag dryer and saved us $500 for a new one. We were able to do the replacement in about an hour. While we were at it we also replaced the belt.
