Why Does My Air Conditioner Smell Like Stinky Socks?

Why is there an odor coming from my air conditioner?
Why does it smell like stinky socks in my home?
Smells coming from your air conditioner is one of the most common complaints we field at McCombs Supply during the summer months.
We get a lot of calls during warm weather from customers asking why the air from the AC unit smells funny. Bad smells - like stinky feet - coming from the air conditioning system into your home is not funny.
Most often the odor is caused by clogs or dirt build up. If your condensate drain is clogged, water will spill from your AC unit and will not drain properly.
This standing water can cause mildew and mold and generates a musty smell that builds up and circulates through your home.
McCombs Supply can help.
ClenAir AVAC Odor Block, (part No. 1500D) a product sold at McCombs Supply, can help.
Odor Block, which also comes in orange scent, eliminates odors caused by mold, mildew, bacteria, pets, smoke, musty odors, water damage, fire damage, paints, chemicals, animal decay, stale air, garbage areas, sewer gases, skunks and more.
Other products that can help eliminate that smelly sock odor include
Pan Strip (part number 2001D), an air conditioner condensate drain pan treatment strip that helps prevent AC drain pan overflows and sludge build up, dirty drain pan and lines and bad odors from the pan.
Nu-Calcun Pan Treat (Part No. 4296-60) is effective in cleaning and preventing the build up of sludge, scum and other deposits and its use will eliminate the extra maintenance costs associated with odors, plugged drains and overflows.
Supco clean treatment tablets prevent the plugging of the air conditioning condensate drip pans and drain lines.
Air conditioning condensate removal pump with safety switch and alarm (part no. PCP115). The 80 decibel alarm will activate when 2 3/4 water collects in the tank.
Vapco HVAC Xpress Seal (part no. XPS-DRY) is used any time there is concern about moisture in the AC system.
It is also important to keep your air conditioner evaporator and condenser coils clean. Vapco X-Factor evaporator and condenser powder coil cleaner dissolves grease, oil, dirt, tar and lint. Spray, wipe, mop or dip item until clean.

Air Conditioning Maintenance Pro Tips
The older your air conditioner gets, the dirtier it gets. Debris and dust can cause parts to wear down and break. You should clean or even replace your existing air conditioner filter before turning it on for the summer season. It will need to be cleaned once a month especially during heavy usage.
Over time Freon slowly escapes, lowering the cooling capacity requiring a professional to refill it. But overtime, the compressor in your air conditioner can also get clogged up with grease and other particles from inside the cooling system. X-Factor evaporator and condenser powder coil cleaner can get the condenser or evaporator coils clean. We also have the X-Factor condenser Fin coil cleaner. See are full line of Vapco X-Factor products
You should hire someone to flush the air conditioning system, instead of just refilling it. The best way to rejuvenate your system is to clean the system of the dirt and grime that is preventing it from working.
Even setting your thermostat too high can cause you air conditioner to not cool properly. If it’s still not cooling, a professional will need to diagnose the problem with your air conditioner.
