History Lesson

A little background, starting in 2010, all dishwasher detergents sold in the United States were required to be phosphate-free.

Though this is a good thing for the environment, it does leave dishwasher with more odor, which causes a mineral build up.

Customer Question

A customer had the following issue with odor from their dishwasher.

Whether there are dishes inside or the dishwasher is empty, it develops a rotten smell. 

It does this even when the door is open after running it to make sure the items completely dry.

The customer tried the following tips to no avail: running a cycle of vinegar and water and running a cycle of bleach in the detergent cup with the racks removed.

Okay, so what’s going on here. Why won’t this odor go away? I checked with my co-worker, Carlos, who said the issue is likely the drain hose is incorrectly connected to the drain, causing the sink wastewater to back up into the dishwasher.

Carlos said the drain hose sits lower than the sink drain, and this must be accounted for to prevent a back-flow situation.

Note: Dishwasher must be empty to use this.

Pour the contents of the package into the soap dispenser (pour any excess into the bottom of the dishwasher).

Run the dishwasher through a light or regular cycle and your dishwasher will be sparkling clean. For heavily stained dishwashers, a second application may be necessary.
