Not to diss other garbage disposals, but Bob Smithfield is partial to the GD12 disposal.

Smithfield, a veteran handyman of more than 20 years, says the GD12 is the perfect combination of power, price and productivity. 

“You can’t beat the price for a half horse power disposal,” says Smithfield, who installs between 20-30 disposals a year (not counting the GD12 units he tells customers to buy before he comes to their home for installation.

Selling for $54.95, the GD12 is “The Plumber’s Choice” for garage disposals. It screws out and screws in very easily.

The GD12 is a replacement disposer. It is not meant for new installation. This is designed to be a drop-in replacement for ISE Insinkerator models Badger1 and Badger5.

Smithfiled, owner of Smithfield’s Plumbing/HVA and Appliance Repair of Lancaster, says the ½ HP disposal is easy to install (about an hour), and he’s only ever had to replace one that didn’t work correctly, so the dependability is good. The unit also has a one-year warranty.

He says the GD12 is good for both homes and apartments. McCombs Supply suggests the unit is great for apartments and places that may consume less food and do not need a large disposal.

A Tip

When installing the GD12, Smithfield, recommends having the proper tools.

“One thing the average person may not be a where of is where the wiring hooks into the disposal you need a very narrow, tiny screw driver,” he says. “I carry one with me so I do not have to stop in the middle of installing and go looking for a screw driver.”
