3 Tips to Help You Prevent Garage Refrigerator Repairs This Summer

Posted by By Eric G. Stark on 30th Aug 2018

I inherited my basement freezer when I bought my house 15 years ago, and I do not know what I'd do without it.

It is great having the extra space to store meat, foods we've canned (for chicken corn soup) and frozen products for quick meals.

I'd miss this chest freezer if it stopped working. I am likely not alone.

Many homeowners keep a spare refrigerator or freezer in their garage or basement as an extra storage solution. While these extra appliances tend to deliver added convenience, their maintenance is sometimes neglected due to their location (I'm guilty of this).

To help reduce the need for  freezer or refrigerator repairs, here are 3 tips for summertime maintenance.

McCombs Supply has replacement parts for your freezer or refrigerator.

1. Keep Clean

Door Gasket

Summer is a good time to clean the dirt and dust that accumulates around your appliance's seal. This dirt can result in the freezer or refrigerator working harder to maintain the cold temperature. McCombs sells  door gaskets or seals

You can clean the existing seal with bleach to keep mildew and mold from setting onto the gasket or seal.

2. Temperature Check

Is your fridge or freezer keeping he correct temperature?

For a refrigerator, the temperature should be at or below 40 F (4C). For a freezer the temp should be 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18C). To make sure you have these temps, buy a small thermometer and place inside the appliance.

Make sure to check the temperature through the summer (and other times of the year).

McCombs sells refrigerator defrost thermostat and other parts for your fridge or freezer.

One part that may interest you is the garage heater kit (part no. 5303918301) for Frigidaire Electrolux refrigerators. This helps the temperature control maintain the proper temperature inside a refrigerator kept in a cold place like a garage or basement.

3. Power Saver Off

I have climate controls in my home, but not in the garage or basement.

This can lead to problems.

When temperatures get too high, appliance start working harder to run effectively. My garage and basement tend to stay cooler than the rest of the house, so this tip worked well for me.

I turned off the power saver on my refrigerator. I really didn't need it on. This feature often creates moisture, and if your garage or basement is like mine and stays cooler, there is already enough moisture in the air that you don't need the freezer or fridge making more. The extra moisture could lead to mold.
