Summer Heat Plays Havoc On AC Units, Refrigerators

Summer heat and humidity is great for sales on HVAC parts, as well as attic and bathroom fans and refrigerator parts.

Besides  McCombs Supply seeing an uptick in sales for these parts, HVAC business across the country are busy with repairs and up keep on air conditioning units.

McCombs has a lot of customers in the state of Texas. The Lone Star state gets very hot - it hit 106 degrees July 25 - and humidity is a killer.

This exert of an article by Aidan Quigley for  DallasNews.com talks about what extreme heat does to your AC unit.

On a stifling 100-degree day when the AC is on the fritz, Brandon Cronkhite knows his job lets him deliver people from a miserable fate.

So the HVAC technician from Berkeys Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical is energetic as he works long hours in sweltering attics to restore cool air to those unfortunate homeowners whose systems have been pushed to their limits.

As the unrelenting summer heat descends on the D-FW region, it’s a constant battle.

“The air conditioners are in the corner of a boxing ring and the Texas summer is just beating on them," he said.

"The longer it stays over 100 degrees the more likely there will be a breakdown, no matter how old the system is.” - Brandon Cronkhite said.

Cronkhite is one of Southlake-based Berkeys’ 22 HVAC technicians. At this point in the year, they are working 60 to 80 hours a week, Cronkhite said, and going into attics where the heat can top 150 degrees.

Yesterday (July 20), the hottest day of the year, an attic where a Berkey technician was working hit 156 degrees.

It's either a professional repair guy, like a Berkey tech, or it's DIYers going in the hot attic.

Texas has extreme summer heat, but the ritual is repeated throughout the United States during the summer months.

The Dallas News story said there are three major benchmarks where service calls spike: the first time it hits 80, the first time it hits 90 and the first time it hits 100. Again, this cycle is likely repeated in other communities in the U.S.

Heat Exhaustion

We field many calls for Do-it-yourselfers not just in Texas, but throughout the U.S.

Summer heat plays havoc on air conditioning units, but it is not the only item impacted by heat. Refrigerators also take a hit on hit days.

Here are some summer/heat products that are popular items to buy this time of year.

The website energy.gov has a story on common air conditioner problems

The compressor and fan controls can wear out, especially when the air conditioner turns on and off frequently.

If you allow filters and air conditioning coils to become dirty, the air conditioner will not work properly, and the compressor or fans are likely to fail prematurely.

X-Factor
